It may not be the easiest text available, but I think it is one of the best for a first course. Are there plenty of examples in the book present? This is something where my syllabus clearly lacks! In general, any time they mention anything they give at least one example of it, though more often than not they'll give three or four. They also constantly provide motivation as to why you are learning any given topic, so very rarely will you ever finish a section wondering why you had to study it.

It seems like a bloated version of Herstein, except it lacks Herstein's depth and clarity. The following is from Googlebooks: It's also probably the cheapest book on this entire list: Massey it seems indeed a good intro book to Galois theory. As long as you don't get the horribly executed Kindle version Here is a list of the books if find go in the greatest depth and yield the clearest intuition on each major subject: Familiar Structures: Rotman, Homological Algebra: Chapter 1 , Bourbaki, Vol Algebras: Later Chapters Abstract Structures: Homological Algebra: Stacks Project: I do not know about a book on algebra by Rotoman, neither does Google.

To begin with, don't let the title scare you. After having read through Rotman's book I am suprised that this text had not crossed my path earlier. It is a wonderful book and must have for any inspiring Algebraist.

Moreover, I am quite shocked that the larger universities have not adopted this book.

For example, my undergraduate Algebra text was Hungerford's and post completion the logical step, being familiar with his style, was to purchase Hungerford's graduate text. For those not familiar, let me tell you there is a night and day difference with repsect to how the material is presented. The flow is smooth, to the point with precise definitions, examples, and ample exercises. I have only two negative remarks: This may be due to the author already having published a book entitled "Galois Theory".

Two, the failure to devote an entire section to Finite Fileds and possibly some its applications. But this failure is minimal since, at present, the majority of Algebra texts, fail to adequately introduce and motivate Finite Fields. I gave this book one star only because I couldn't give it a score of zero!!! Although many professors say that this book is excellent, remember they are professors who already understand the material.

Abstract Algebra

This book shows no examples, and the examples that it does show end abruptly with comments such as "all items are routine. Please show me what to do so that I don't have to spend more money on a separate study guide. Aren't mathematics texts expensive enough? This book may be an excellent addition to a professors library but this book should never, ever be used as a primary text for students.

Summary Designed for an advanced undergraduate- or graduate-level course, Abstract Algebra provides an example-oriented, less heavily symbolic approach to abstract algebra. The text emphasizes specifics such as basic number theory, polynomials, finite fields, as well as linear and multilinear algebra.

This classroom-tested, how-to manual takes a more narrative approach than the stiff formalism of many other textbooks, presenting coherent storylines to convey crucial ideas in a student-friendly, accessible manner.

An unusual feature of the text is the systematic characterization of objects by universal mapping properties, rather than by constructions whose technical details are irrelevant. Addresses Common Curricular Weaknesses In addition to standard introductory material on the subject, such as Lagrange's and Sylow's theorems in group theory, the text provides important specific illustrations of general theory, discussing in detail finite fields, cyclotomic polynomials, and cyclotomic fields.

Modern Algebra

The book also focuses on broader background, including brief but representative discussions of naive set theory and equivalents of the axiom of choice, quadratic reciprocity, Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions, and some basic complex analysis.

Numerous worked examples and exercises throughout facilitate a thorough understanding of the material. Request an e-inspection copy. Share this Title. Shopping Cart Summary.
