Le Parfum des Fleurs

I would say it's for those with intermediate knowledge of perfume, though. At times, the author's writing was so poetical that it was hard for me to truly understand.

For example, when he's talking about how he formulates perfume, and "composing" and "shaping" a scent. Perfume fans will understand the categories of perfume he talks about, and at one point, he imagines a new set of categories for perfume, which I found interesting to contemplate.

However, one of the categorie I liked this book! However, one of the categories is "classic," which seems to me to be quite difficult to objectively categorize a perfume.

What, objectively, could make a perfume "classic"? I feel that is arguable.

While the author appreciates advanced in perfumery over the years, he seems to be pretty much over mass-marketed perfumes and prefers "niche" perfumers who create scents based on their creative visions and desire to achieve originality instead of catering to something that "most" will like. This book was written in , and when I started to become more interested in perfume in , I could already see that niche perfumers were getting more popular.

You can tell the author has a lot of insider knowledge about all of the things that go into making perfume commercially, as he's done it for over 40 years. If you want a look inside the industry, this is a good book to check out. It's quite short.

The main aim of this little lovely book is to introduce the reader to the romantic world of perfumes, but it falls short on conveying the beauty of this job or were my expectations too high?

The bigger part of the book is rather technical and states a lot of facts than can be simply googled. However, the chapters on the composition of perfume are incredibly beautifully written - it's obvious that Jean-Claude Ellena is a real professional and approaches perfume making as a sensual, emotion-driven art. I really wished to read more on the backstage of his working process. Very technical in some aspects. Interesting read. A rigidly structured review of perfumery: The focus is definitely on France and on luxury perfumes as opposed to mass production: This is a translation of a volume in the huge, long-running French series "Que sais-je?

A good accompaniment or substitute for reading this book is an episode of the podcast "Working," in which a very articulate perfumer lays out what her job is like.

From what I could tell and confirmed with the reading of the english translation it's a very straightforward narrative of the process and probably not much interest to anyone who is not passionate about the subject matter.

An informative little book if you don't know anything about perfume, and Ellena certainly writes well, but coming to this as someone who already has an interest in perfume I didn't feel like I learned much.

If you've read Chandler Burr's The Perfect Scent you'll already know about most of what's covered here. View 2 comments. A very inside-baseball look at the world of perfumery from one of the masters of the art who has created many well-known scents for the House of Hermes.

A lot of it went over my head, but it's fascinating to see the world through his eyes, and very revealing about the role of scents, fragrance, and perfumes in our modern world. This book was very dry. I was hoping for more poetry from someone who makes such beautiful perfumes.
