Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
During a Herbology lesson, Ron expresses his jealousy of not being invited to Slughorn's upcoming Christmas party, to the point of teasing Hermione about it. When she tells him that she was planning to invite him, however, his attitude changes, and they begin to show signs of attraction to each other. Harry is unsure how he feels about this, remembering his unsuccessful relationship with Cho Chang during his fifth year.
With Katie unable to play, Harry recruits Dean Thomas onto the Quidditch team , which continues to improve. On their way back from practise however, Harry and Ron come across Dean and Ginny kissing behind a tapestry. Harry feels a huge surge of jealousy toward Dean, while Ron and Ginny have a heated argument. Ron states that he doesn't want to see his sister "snogging" kissing people in public, while Ginny tells him that her love life is none of his business, and that he's only upset because he's never kissed anyone, referencing Harry and Cho's relationship and revealing that Hermione had once kissed Viktor Krum.
This piece of information wrecks Ron's relationship with Hermione , as well as his Quidditch skills, and badly alters his personality. Harry meanwhile tries to convince himself that his feelings for Ginny are entirely elder brotherly, but eventually realises that he has fallen in love with her.
To improve Ron's Quidditch and mend his friendship with Hermione, Harry pretends to slip Ron some Felix Felicis on the day of the match between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Feeling lucky, Ron goes on to save everything the Slytherin chasers throw at him, and Gryffindor hammers Slytherin. However, the plan backfires. After the match, Ron accuses Hermione of not having faith in his Quidditch abilities, because she thought he really had taken lucky potion, and starts going out with Lavender Brown to spite her.
On their return to Hogwarts , Harry notices Ginny is not enthusiastic about meeting Dean, and tells Hermione about what he heard between Malfoy and Snape , but she also believes Snape was working on Dumbledore 's orders.
When Harry mentions Fenrir Greyback , a werewolf Lupin had told him about during the holidays and the werewolf that bit him, she recalls Malfoy threatening Borgin with him, and Harry states that this proves Malfoy 's a Death Eater. Hermione, however, got past this one, saying that it might have been "an empty threat.
He first investigated his father, and later assumed the name Lord Voldemort upon discovering his father was a Muggle and never attended Hogwarts. Dumbledore and Harry then go into Morfin Gaunt 's memory, where he reveals to his nephew, Voldemort how he was conceived. After hearing this, Voldemort went on to murder his Muggle ancestors, taking revenge on them for abandoning him, eliminating the last of the "unworthy" Riddle line, stealing Morfin's father's ring and implanted false memories into Morfin, framing him for the murders.
In the next memory, Voldemort asks Slughorn about Horcruxes , which results in Slughorn yelling that he knows nothing about them. Dumbledore is confident that the memory has been tampered with, however, noting patches of grey fog that came up when Slughorn was shouting, and asks Harry to retrieve the true memory. Realising Harry is on to him after a botched attempt from Harry to get the memory, Slughorn starts avoiding him, and Harry instead chooses to focus on investigating Malfoy, using the Marauder's Map , noticing that Malfoy disappears off it at certain times.
Ron reconciles with Hermione and Ginny. Some time afterwards, Hagrid tells Harry that he overheard Dumbledore and Snape arguing, and Cormac McLaggen confronts Harry to ensure he can play in Ron's place in the upcoming Quidditch match.
Harry also finds out that Ron has been avoiding Lavender. Later, at the Quidditch match, with Luna commentating, McLaggen grabs a beater's bat to show the beater how to hit the bludgers, and accidentally cracks Harry's skull. Finally, in the hospital wing, Harry summons Kreacher and Dobby and orders them to tail Malfoy. In their fourth lesson, Dumbledore is disappointed that Harry failed to obtain Slughorn's true memory. Harry apologises and promises to try harder, which Dumbledore is happier about.
Dumbledore shows him two memories: Dumbledore explains that Smith was murdered by Riddle and stole the locket and cup. The post for Defence Against the Dark Arts was jinxed by Riddle out of spite; teachers never held the post for more than a year, suffering some terrible fate or humiliation which caused them to leave the position.
It turns out that in reality, Slughorn told Riddle everything he wanted to know about Horcruxes. He reluctantly explains that Horcruxes are extremely dark objects which a person conceals a piece of soul in, to achieve immortality. Riddle questions Slughorn if it was possible to have multiple Horcruxes, something that horrifies Slughorn.
This explains how Voldemort was able to survive his rebounding killing curse. Dumbledore believed that Voldemort made six Horcruxes: Harry learns the next day that Ginny and Dean have split up. He is unwilling to ask her out though, fearing Ron's reaction. Meanwhile, a recovered Katie Bell has returned to the school, and Harry asks who gave her the necklace.
She states that someone Imperiused her in the girl's bathroom at Rosmerta's Pub in Hogsmeade. Shortly before the final Quidditch match of the year, Harry finds Malfoy crying over how his mission is failing.
When he sees Harry, he attacks him. Snape witnesses the event, heals Malfoy, and gives Harry a large number of detentions that cause him to miss the match.
Upon returning to the Gryffindor common room after his first detention, he discovers that the team had won the Quidditch Cup in his absence, and Ginny runs up and hugs him.
At this point, Harry finally reveals his feelings for Ginny and kisses her. Both of them are ecstatic and start dating. Some time later, Dumbledore asks Harry to come to his office. On the way, he runs into his old Divination teacher Professor Trelawney , who was trying to hide sherry bottles in the Room of Requirement before being thrown out.
She tells Harry that she heard a male voice which Harry suspects to be Malfoy's whooping before she was ejected, and also reveals that Snape had told Voldemort about the prophecy concerning him and Harry, which caused him to murder Harry's parents.
Harry expresses outrage that Dumbledore later gave Snape a job at Hogwarts, but Dumbledore states that Snape felt great remorse for what he had done. He then asks Harry to join him in finding a Horcrux, Slytherin's locket, which Harry agrees to.
Before leaving, Harry tells Ron and Hermione that Malfoy's almost certainly going to try something tonight, and gives them the remainder of the Felix Felicis. Dumbledore and Harry travel to a cave in which Voldemort had tormented two children in his youth. They proceed through the cave, coming to an island in the middle of a lake.
On the island, they find a basin of emerald green potion , with the locket at the bottom. On Dumbledore's orders, Harry reluctantly force-feeds him the potion, which badly weakens him and causes extreme thirst. In an attempt to save him, Harry gives him water from the lake, awakening dozens of Inferi Voldemort had placed to guard his Horcrux.
Harry attempts to fight, but there are too many of them. Just as he is about to be overwhelmed, Dumbledore creates a ring of fire around them, which fends off the Inferi, and allows them to escape with the locket to Hogsmeade, where they discover the Dark Mark above the astronomy tower at Hogwarts.
Borrowing broomsticks, the pair fly to the tower. Upon hearing someone approaching them, Dumbledore uses a charm to paralyse Harry and hides him under his invisibility cloak, before being disarmed by Malfoy.
Malfoy reveals that he had let Death Eaters into the school through a pair of vanishing cabinets, which were the objects Harry had overheard him questioning Borgin about. Malfoy also explains that he was behind the cursed necklace and poisoned mead incidents, which were really assassination attempts on Dumbledore. Dumbledore reveals that he had known Malfoy was attempting to kill him, but allowed him to remain at Hogwarts because he knew that Voldemort would have murdered Malfoy once his cover had been blown.
Dumbledore tries to persuade him to change sides, but the other Death Eaters join the scene and urge Malfoy to finish his mission. Then Snape appears, and with Malfoy still reluctant to finish off the unarmed Dumbledore, Snape kills Dumbledore.
Released from the spell after Dumbledore's death, Harry pursues Snape through battle in the halls of the school and out onto the grounds. Near the entrance to Hogwarts, Harry attempts to curse Snape, who repels his attacks with ease and reminds the other Death Eaters they are not to harm the boy.
When Harry tries one of the Half-Blood Prince's spells, an enraged Snape reveals that the spell is his own. He is the Half-Blood Prince, having taken the title when he was a student as a pun on his mother's maiden name. Hermione's research later reveals that Snape's father was a Muggle named Tobias Snape and his mother a pureblood witch named Eileen Prince. When he returns to Dumbledore's body, Harry finds that the locket was a fake: After the battle, Ginny accompanies Harry to the hospital wing, where he learns that the only other person who died was a Death Eater.
None of Harry's friends are badly hurt, apart from Bill Weasley , the Weasleys' oldest child who was attacked by an untransformed Greyback, although the only side effects are permanent scars across his face and a liking for rare steaks. Fleur expresses her desire to marry Bill despite his potential transformations, and she and Mrs Weasley reconcile.
Tonks reveals her love for Lupin , who had refused her because he was a werewolf and felt that she deserved someone young and whole, unlike himself. Professor McGonagall questions Harry about what he and Dumbledore were doing, but Harry, under orders from Dumbledore not to tell anyone except Ron and Hermione, refuses. The teachers then discuss the future of Hogwarts, and plans for Dumbledore's funeral.
Harry turns his back on the Half-Blood Prince's book, and regrets ever possessing it, although Hermione and Ron comfort him, stating that while the Prince may have had a mean sense of humour, nothing in the book ever indicated that he was evil, or capable of murder.
The funeral is attended by many witches and wizards, including a number of minor characters in the series. During the funeral, Harry ends his relationship with Ginny to protect her from Voldemort. She reveals that she had never given up on him; Hermione had advised her to go out with other people so she could relax around Harry, as previously she had trouble talking to him.
As a result, he fell in love with her upon seeing who she really was, and regrets not asking her out sooner. Harry then meets Scrimgeour, who again makes the offer he'd made to Harry at Christmas, which Harry again turns down.
He then tells Ron and Hermione of his intention to leave Hogwarts to destroy the Horcruxes and then Voldemort himself. His two best friends agree to travel with him on his quest, and Harry happily acknowledges that there is "still one last golden day of peace left to enjoy with Ron and Hermione". In May, , bookmakers in the UK suspended bets on which main character would die in the book amid fears of insider knowledge.
A number of high value bets were made on the death of Albus Dumbledore, many coming from the town of Bungay where, it was believed, the books were being printed at the time. Betting was later reopened. The Canadian publisher, Raincoast Books , obtained an injunction from the Supreme Court of British Columbia prohibiting the purchasers from reading the books before the official release date or of discussing the contents.
Purchasers were offered a Harry Potter T-shirt and an autographed copy of the book if they returned their copies before 16 July. On 15 July, less than twelve hours before the book went on sale in the Eastern time zone, Raincoast warned The Globe and Mail newspaper that publishing a review from a Canada-based writer at midnight, as the paper had promised, would be seen as a violation of the anti-reading injunction.
The injunction sparked a number of news articles questioning the injunction's restriction on fundamental rights. In the same week, a Chicago Walgreens mistakenly sold a copy of the book. When the purchaser read about the Canadian incident on the Internet she said she would not turn herself in, but that she would not read the novel until the U.
The American edition of the book, published by Scholastic Press , was printed with a percentage of recycled paper that Scholastic declined to make public. Various publishers have announced release dates for local translations of the book worldrelease:. See here. The book was also adapted into a film, the sixth Harry Potter film of the series.

Believe me, being dead will have improved him a lot. Because I don't even care. There is no repentance after this. I don't even care what the "reason" is in book 7, but Harry: I am so angry at Snape arghhhqqwqq. Good now. I'm calm. Thank you. I'm good. I also am fairly annoyed about Voldermort's Tom Riddle backstory. Because he read like he was straight out of a psychopath text book Attractive, calm, subtle bully, kleptomaniac, limited emotional reach, charmer, smooth I can just read a book about psychopaths and that's Voldey's description.
I wish there'd been a little more ingenuity in there. I KNOW. But he's a bully! He was bullying first year's the whole time Like how is that good?? How is that okay??? I will not forgive Ron for all this.
How can I ship them when he's so rude and demeaning to her?? I DON'T. Hermione deserves better. And I don't buy the "She completes him by sorting him out" because I think all humans should take responsibility for their actions.
So basically YES, I had a fantastic time with this book. I loved the audio. I loved the story. I loved Harry and the world just feels so big and rich and visual. And then watch all the movies. And then I'll finally be caught up, omg. Only took me like 10 years. View all comments. View all 20 comments.

It's a book that manages to balance so much darkness with light, so evident too in the last line. View all 10 comments. Popular Fantasy Geeks. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I had resisted this popular phenomenon until I was forced to pick it up for a grade, and Book 1 was short enough that I could read it in the course of 2 hours. After all, if I was bored and looking for something light, I could do worse than a fantasy about a child wizard who fights evil with his friends.
But it was really the third book, with its increasing darkness, that took me in and made me a fan. Voldemort is from a once-powerful wizard family reduced to poverty that lives in a dilapidated hovel on the edge of a small town, wary of outsiders, and their main point of pride is their pure blood, the lineage having cross-bred for generations so as not to pollute the line.
She ends up pregnant, the man deserts her, and she dies while giving birth to her half-wizard, half-muggle son, thus making him an orphan like Harry. Faulkner anyone? But whereas Harry comes to Hogwarts and befriends Ron and Hermione creating unity and strength through positive emotions, Voldemort, when growing in the orphanage shuns other children, torturing them at times without the awareness of adults and stealing their possessions. Over the course of his time at Hogwarts, Voldemort, charming as only evil can be, learns to win over people as a means to an end and disguise his insidious purposes, but he never befriends anyone.
The stakes are higher than before, the action and pace increase as the conclusion draws near, and things are looking darker than ever, which is the setup that any fan wants when the end is looming and it leaves us with the question: How will our hero prevail? View all 50 comments.

I'm not sure why, but this one took me completely by surprise. I was expecting this installment to be mainly filler to get us to the Deathly Hallows, but so much happened here that I must have forgotten from the movie. The Half-Blood prince was considerably darker than the previous 5 books, and I just adore how this series has progressed and grown just like most of its readers have.
Obviously I knew what the big reveal was prior to finishing the book due to my viewing the films before, but it di I'm not sure why, but this one took me completely by surprise. Obviously I knew what the big reveal was prior to finishing the book due to my viewing the films before, but it didn't take away from the experience the novel had to offer. I have this nervous lump in my throat knowing that the next book is the final one, but am simultaneously excited to finally read what the films surely have left out surrounding the conclusion of the series.

I literally need a whole book about Tom Riddle's life. That would make me happy. Harry is always going on about how great the Prince is and how terrible Snape is, etc. I loved it! I'm picturing a sort of weird looking Tom Riddle like "plz. He meant it in a friendly way but Hermione definitely loved hearing it.

How could it not fall for it again and again and again. Some of my favourite scenes in no particular order: Weasly falling into each others arms crying just thinking about it makes me teary but no, really: Fleur is such an amazing and slightly underrated character.
She lives with the Weasleys, where, honestly, no one makes it easy for her. Molly is fighting a constant battle with her but Fleur doesn't back off. Everyone is convinced she is vain and arrogant, but it's that moment in the hospital wing where - finally - these two amazing women recognise each other as equals, where Fleur gains acceptance and much more than that: Everyone expected her to leave Bill for selfish reasons, no one expected that she really, truly loves him.
But by proving that she would stand by him, whatever might happen - and everyone knew bad things were going to happen - she opened Molly's eyes and Molly saw her, for the first time, for what she really was. A strong and fierce woman and wife, as she was herself. He's come to tell you - well, I'll let him do it.
Firstly, the dreadful second Quidditch match, secondly the Sectumsempra scene with Malfoy and Snape, thirdly Dumbledore suffering in the Cave.
They are not very enjoyable. Something that will forever annoy me is how absolutely no one believes Harry's Malfoy-is-a-Death-Eater theory. He keeps telling Ron and Hermione about it but they ignore him. And then again, do you really expect me to believe that the brightest witch of her age would only get and "Exceeds Expectations" on her Defence Against The Dark Arts O. Doesn't make sense. Especially not after Dumbledore's Army.
In a nutshell: I love Harry Potter. Not sure I mentioned that before. Find more of my books on Instagram Since pretty much everyone I know has read these books, I figure reviewing them is pretty pointless. But with the new book coming out in a couple of days, I have to go through them beginning to end.

It still got me in the feels, though. The book as a whole was really fun and entertaining. I love the mystery and learning more about Voldemort. The romance drama was funny as well. I can't wait to see what adventures the next book brings and how it all concludes.. View all 6 comments.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
It's the first time that the Muggle world and the magic one come bluntly face to face. Rowling chooses that the first chapter of this novel is the right time for this interaction, highlighting the dramatic situation and the necessary cooperation to stem the enemy of all: Lord Voldemort.
Luckily, for some difficult questions Dumbledore bails me out every time: Unfortunately, it will never be the same. E' la prima volta che il mondo babbano e quello magico si trovano ad interloquire senza mezzi termini. View 2 comments. Actual rating: So, my dear underside-of-a-rock-residing friends: This review will be interesting, because this book was far far, far from perfect, and yet I am utterly determined to give it 5 stars. Which I have only given to the first book in this series.
God, how do you talk about this book? It is really hard for me to feel anything while reading a book or generally living my life.
For example, I felt nothing when Sirius died. Nothing throughout most of this series, actually. And nothing in this book, because nothing happened and everyone survived and everything is sunshiney and joyful! I tried. The last hundred-ish pages of this book really tore me apart. I love him so much. Do I even have a top 5? He denounces the sucking up of others. He works hard in school! He is a good friend even when his two BFFS are being childish to one another plus refusing to believe him.
Gorgeous character development in pages. But she is so great! So funny. I wish there was more of her in this book. Cough, Snape is, cough. I fell deeply in love with the guy. Dumbledore, not Snape. Goddamn it. I missed Hermione and Neville. Hermione was absolutely not well-represented here at all. Ron is soooooooooo annoying!
In fact, Ronald is a pretty impressive character for the number of gross character traits he embodies despite being supposed to be a good character. Mean, immature, rude, jealous, definition of an inferiority complex. Can we do Hermione and Fred instead? Ron and Luna would be cute. It started with the last book and came fully around here.
Like, at a certain point, the man needs a character trait. Plus makes the plot repetitive once in a while. Also, Tonks. She was a hilarious badass in the last book, totally depressed and weak in this one. Kill me, please. Then I can see my beloved Dumbledore again.
Too much Snape. Cannot WAIT to write the rant on him. Too much Draco. Why do people romanticize that little weirdo so much? I hate Kreacher and I hate Dobby I hated Winky, too I might hate house elves. I think my inability to cry is making this worse. Damn you, my lack of emotions! Just kidding love you.
But I want to give this book five stars more than anything. It was so compulsively readable, more than any other book since the first for me. That makes me so sad. And also seriously screwed. And, okay, even though I was a harsh critic of these books This is one of the greatest settings of all time.
Bottom line: An absolute dream. Also seven more books! View all 34 comments. What this book tells me is that sadly the more conservative of readers, grammarians etc will place so many books above Harry Potter 6, none of which is worth mentioning in the same breath as Potter lore. To me this series is special. Nobody else will undertake waiting for each book to come out and lay our hands on them.
The Potter universe will belong to our descendants forever. But it was we who helped create this fervor and unmatched popularity. Buddyread with the cutest Trixi. Bahaha 6. Potions class has never been this cheerful. Thanks Grampy Sloghorn and Harry has never performed better. Thanks to cheating.
Ron, you bollocks! Stop being an idiot, WonWon! Voldemort as a student seems to me even more sinister than the Dark Lord he already is. Take that, Rufus! Why do you keep looking for Ginny, now Harry? Who would have thought that the once timid Ginny will blossom into a confident, beautiful, charming, funny and best of all, snarky girl?
Chapter 24 will particularly make you swoon! RIP, Aragog. For the first time, I solved the mystery! I knew there was a reason Harry spent so much time with Professor Dumbledore. Kreacher and Dobby 2. Bill and Fleur 3. Harry breaking up with Ginny which reminds me of Peter Parker and Mj. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it. The fact that you can feel pain like this is your greatest strength.

Rounded it up into 5 stars! I have lost a favorite character that always made me laugh and smile. I even still can't get over his death. I also still don't how Bill fell in love with her but yeah, she is pretty but I thought Bill deserved someone better than her. I like Bill so much. Ginny mimed vomiting into her cereal behind Fleur. Harry choked over his cornflakes and Ron thumped him on the back. Hermione and Ginny didn't even like her.
Bill is no longer as handsome as he used to be but Fleur still loves him. She is the right girl for Bill, even though I am a little bit jealous hahaha xD Ron and Hermione I ship these two so much and I really really like Ron. Ron and Hermione are always funny. He thought that Hermione kissed Krum and he was so angry and jealous because of this and he kissed Lavender in the common room that was full of people and it also broke Hermione's heart. Harry looked into the corner she was indicating.
There, in full view of the whole room, stood Ron wrapped so closely around Lavender Brown it was hard to tell whose hands were whose. I remember very clearly that I cried so much till my eyes were red and puffy and that time I kept saying that I hated him and I didn't care about him but saying that seemed useless because I kept crying and crying. That time I wanted to hurt Ron's heart too, I wanted him to feel the exact pain Hermione felt when she saw him kissing Lavender.
I think he was trying to say Hermione, so that meant he dreamt about her and I forgave him that exact time and he also didn't really like Lavender anymore since then.
I think he just kissed Lavender because he wanted to make Hermione jealous and feel hurt, which he successfully did. Harry And Ginny have you ever thought why Ginny had relationship with quite many guys?
But she always got a boyfriend as soon as she split up with her ex and my thoughs about this is probably right because Ginny said this to Harry on the end of the book 'I never really gave up on you,' she said. I always hoped Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember?
And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more - myself. But according to what she said she never really gave up on Harry so that means she has always loved him. I was a bit sad when Harry said they can't be together again because Harry was afraid if something would happen to Ginny if they kept seeing each other.
I hope so Dumbledore's death I admit that Dumbledore is not one of my top favorite characters in this series but I always found him funny and a bit weird, in a good way, of course.
But his death left me in shock because he was actually pleading to Snape but Snape killed him with The Avada Kedavra curse and I thought Snape was on the good side. What will happen now after Dumbledore died?! He is the only one Voldemort is afraid of. I have this feeling that I'll to lose my favorite characters again View all 22 comments. Always been my favorite out of the seven. View all 5 comments. Spoilers for anyone who has never read the books or seen the movies. In which case, have you been living under a rock?! Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love. He is clever, kind, badass, but most of all, he is weird. And I like weird. I like the way his first-day-of-the-year speeches make no sense at all.
