His startling but by no means atypical example is a quotation from Dr Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations at the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Paris, who wrote in about what he takes to be an upsurge of antisemitism: These illusions of normalization were splintered with the Intifada, Durban the UN World Conference against Racism as a new threshold in post-Holocaust anti-Semitism and a new global threat to both the Jewish and the global condition … The language is strikingly reminiscent: In other words, as all serious artists do, he is mining his immediate milieu as a way of directly unearthing the deeper questions of family, society, belief, culture, relationships — the underlying nature of humanity.
This prizewinning book is a riotous morass of jokes and worries about Jewish identity, though it is by no means too myopic to be enjoyed by the wider world. The novel is outraged by a spike in antisemitic violence that occurred during the conflict, and is clearly anxious that criticisms of Israel jeopardise the historical rationale for a Jewish State as a refuge for victims, past, present and future, of an eternal and ubiquitous Gentile antisemitism.
The Finkler Question: A Novel
Acculturated by Hephzibah, Treslove progressively learns the authentic diasporic Jewish language of Yiddish, reads the great Jewish medieval sage Maimonides, and enthusiastically collaborates in her initiative to found a museum of Anglo-Jewish culture Finkler does not allow himself to use the word Israel at all; for him there is no Israel, only Palestine.
He detests his fellow Jews for their clannishness about Israel and loves to publicly tell Gentiles that as a Jew he is ashamed of Israel, a calculated confession he makes when he appears on the BBC celebrity radio programme Desert Island Discs.
Rather than enabling a Menippean testing of ideas, the novel is eager, by virtue of a near unanimous chorus of pre-emptive character assessment, to warn the reader that anti-Israeli rhetoric by Jews is a form of vainglorious cant and fashionable group-think masquerading as ethical universalism. In the first place, Finkler belongs to a long line of individualistic Jewish parvenus and converts, stretching back to the medieval court Jew, who would gladly shirk the cultural baggage of Orthodox Judaism for professional success.
In addition to his parvenu ambitions, Finkler is arrogant and narcissistic but dissimulates those traits as anti- Zionist intellectual rigor.
In the post-Holocaust imaginary, German Jews are often despised as exemplars of assimilationist folly. Even the outgoing, generous and socially inclusive Hephzibah is firmly committed to honouring her ancestors on this question. She refuses, as a skilled vocalist, to sing any Wagner, not even Tristan und Isolde: Thus when Sam Finkler decides to join ASHamed, a group of anti- Zionist Jews who wish to boycott Israel, nominally because of its treatment of the Palestinians, the novel has already established an over- determined interpretive framework predicated on the distinction between authentic and self-hating Jews, between the historically derived communal values of Jewish culture and the modish attention- seeking of rootless Jewish individuals.
To seek the attention of the Gentile world by decrying other Jews can only encourage latent and overt antisemites most non- Jews judging by the novel who seek to camouflage and rationalise their hatred. Ashamed Jews? Must he smoke his cigar? This is a scenario, the novel intimates, that prevailed in Germany before the rise of the Nazis, when the Jews, as now, sought the love and admiration of a society which despised them.
This is because the novel not only diagnoses but also adumbrates the possibility of recovery from the infectious miasma of Jewish anti-Zionism. The novel suggests that the means of addressing the fissures in the Jewish community catalysed by the State of Israel are not political.
The reformed Jewish subjectivity Finkler achieves by the end of the novel is instinctively capable of learning the real lessons of the Holocaust, not as an historically distant event but an ever present possibility. Whichever way he looked at it, he was to blame. Bad husband, bad father, bad example, bad Jew.
