Sort order. Apr 06, Jan rated it really liked it. Joseph Delaney can do no wrong and this is pre Tom Ward. It was a lovely outing to see John Gregory before he took on Tom as his last apprentice. Much in the mode of Wardstone Chronicles and enjoyable. Joseph Delaney is a great author and his novels remain an excellent read.
Mar 01, Miranda Reads rated it really liked it. He's back! The series continues! Review to come! Blog Instagram Twitter. Jan 03, Toby Causon rated it liked it. It's worth a read if you are a fan of the spooks series like I am. But I was kind of hoping to see more of the spook, but rather we only really got a glimpse of the new characters. It was well written and I enjoyed it, even if it was a little short thought that is to be expected since it is a 'short story'. On retrouve ici la plume efficace de Joseph Delaney.
Ici, on nous met les deux personnages principaux en couple. Elle va me manquer! Dec 04, Emmy Johnson rated it really liked it. As mentioned before I have a nostalgic love for Joseph Delaney which no other author could ever amount too. However, over the past few years I have admittedly been a bit disappointed with his novels, The Seventh Apprentice finally left me feeling hopeful for Delaney's future books! This novella features both old and new characters who I came to love instantly.
They were fun, and you definitely get to see a side of John Gregory which wasn't seen before, a more fatherly and younger side. Delaney's As mentioned before I have a nostalgic love for Joseph Delaney which no other author could ever amount too. Delaney's dark atmosphere which originally drew me to his book was back with vengeance, there were some truly disturbing scenes which made me cringe, even one scene which made me gag.
Delaney's masterful description of gore and horror never ceases to draw me in, and I will never understand how these books can be found in the children's section! If anything this novella has made me want to re read the Wardstone Chronicles from the beginning, I'm in desperate need for some nostalgic horror now! Jan 12, Laflut rated it it was amazing Shelves: Astonishingly, this book was the best of the series I ever red.
For the first time in this series, there were credible situations and there was not a hero fallen from the sky at the right moment.
Plus, this book was so freaking! I was scared, really scared with all the adventures that Will had to deal with. And at last, I really felt a bound between Will and I. I identified myself from the first words I red. What a pity that I've never felt like this with the whole series I precise that I don't Astonishingly, this book was the best of the series I ever red.
I precise that I don't still have red the last one. Jan 22, Andrew rated it liked it. Johnson is mentioned briefly in the Starblade series, and this novella gives you some background about him. Get A Copy. More Details Other Editions 1.

The Last Apprentice: Complete Collection by Joseph Delaney
Jan 01, Taptapovina rated it it was amazing. Aug 05, Drew Maliniak rated it it was ok. A series with promise that failed to deliver. A few terrific lines: Tom Ward doesn't compare to the darker Alice.
Dec 15, Lisa Butterworth rated it it was ok. I'm reviewing the series as one book because it's not worth the effort to break it up. I think it has something to do with the Spook's "purity" dogma. The book gives lip service t 2.
The Spook's Apprentice
The book gives lip service to the idea that we are all both light and dark, that there can be both good and bad witches, and I kept reading with the hope that learning to integrate our shadows would be part of the various character archs. But no, the growth never happens, the mythology of the witches and magic remains shallow and dissatisfying. There is no deeper explaination for why some practices are "dark" or some "light" why is looking through a mirror so very bad that you're going to take a 14 year old girl and bury her alive where she will live in dark isolation and eat worms until she escapes in 40 years wanting to kill you?
Oh no!! So many of the "light" practices seem morally questionable or down right wrong to me, and the "dark" practices seem not so bad.
I mean ambiguity IS FINE, it's okay that lots of things are grey and it's hard to know what is the best thing to do, but the book does not explore these problems it just says "this is dark" your soul is in peril!
Second major critique is this series just feels deeply anti woman to me. Again Delany tries I guess? To include complex female characters, but he fails.
All the female characters feel kinda hollow, like they have no soul, the male characters spend most of their time distrusting female power I don't know how to read his witches as anything other than a metaphor for female power and it's almost always evil , and the only good way to be a woman is to give up your power and raise male babies or to love powerful men without ever using power of your own.
All the powerful women are evil, or former evil trying to atone through their man, or potential evil. There really are no good women or witches here, even his name for good witches is "benign witches", which is there any less powerful word than benign? It seems that darkness is only something women are guilty of, and men being horrible is just a normal part of life.
I think Delany is terrified of female power and women in general, I kept reading and kept hoping that at some point the narrative would get more complex and this theme of the distrust of "darkness" aka: Sep 26, Audible rated it it was amazing Shelves: I really enjoyed the books during my fourth grade year.
Although I was never able to read the last book of the series, what I did read was very enjoyable. The lore of the series is very immersive, and Joseph Delaney's style charmed me beginning with Revenge of the Witch.
Really good series that I recommend spending some time on, though the content can be rather dark for some readers. Jan 15, Zara Zana rated it it was amazing.
This will be the book series I will read to my children. It is so well written that you cannot but devour two books per day.
I love the feeling, the atmosphere, everything. I cannot wait to read it out loud to my kids. Sep 15, Ishaal Ramroop rated it it was amazing. Aug 12, Matthew Quezergue rated it it was amazing. Spook's are guardians of the light and are tasked with protecting the county and it's people from the dark. John Gregory has been at the trade for many years and is looking for an apprentice to take up his mantle.
