Four crucial years in a troubled teenager's life are the focus of this eloquently written, suspenseful second novel by the author of the praised Suspicious River.
When Katrina Connors' mother walks out on her family, Kat is surprised but not shocked; the whole year she has been "becoming sixteen" - falling in love with the boy next door, shedding her babyfat, discovering sex - her mother has been slowly withdrawing. As Kat and her impassive father pick up the pieces of their daily lives, she finds herself curiously unaffected by her mother's absence. But in dreams that become too real to ignore, she's haunted by her mother's cries for help. Finally, she must act on her instinct that something violent and evil has occurred - a realization that brings Kat to a chilling discovery. Download ebook for print-disabled. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Laura Kasischke. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, before being given a limited theatrical release on October 24, The story weaves back-and-forth with flashbacks of Eve's past life and the present day. In the flashbacks, Eve was a wild girl who gradually changed into a domesticated housewife after marrying Brock Christopher Meloni , an ordinary man who leads an uneventful life.
While Kat explores her blossoming sexuality with her handsome but dim-witted neighbor and schoolmate, Phil Shiloh Fernandez , Eve struggles to deal with aging and quenching her youthful wildness. She tries to be sexy when Brock is away, even luring Phil's attention.
After Eve disappears, Kat deals with her abandonment without much issue, occasionally releasing her own wild side, seducing the detective Thomas Jane investigating her mother's disappearance.
The film then jumps forward three years to the spring of On a break from college, Kat returns home and seems unfazed to learn that her father is in a relationship with a co-worker. The detective Kat has been having an affair with informs her that Brock might have killed Eve after catching her cheating.
Kat dismisses this theory, just like she did three years ago, but after mentioning the topic to her friends Beth Gabourey Sidibe and Mickey Mark Indelicato they tell her they suggested this same theory to her and she dismissed them as well. Kat suspects Phil of having slept with Eve and confronts him the night before she is to return to college, but Phil angrily rebuffs it and tells her that her father knows where her mother is.
After having recurring dreams about her mother being stranded in the snow, Kat begins to unpack Brock's suspiciously locked freezer in their basement, but is stopped when he walks in on her.
She questions him about her mother's disappearance, asking if he does in fact know where she is, but he denies having any knowledge of her whereabouts. Believing her father, Kat bids him goodbye and tearfully boards her flight, returning to college. It is revealed that this was the last time Kat sees her father, as he went out to a bar shortly thereafter and drunkenly admitted to murdering Eve.

He is soon arrested and later hangs himself with a sheet in his jail cell, also revealing that he moved Eve's body from the freezer the night before Kat unpacked it. The film ends with a flashback of Eve's death; she came home from shopping the afternoon of her disappearance to find Brock and Phil in bed together.
In her conscious attempt to seduce of the detective, assuring him she is already 18 and already sexuality active, she is not a lost little girl manipulated by an older man, attempting to use this relationship to make an official move into adulthood. However, besides sex, there is little at stake until the final act.
Kat enjoys sex and admires her body, rare things for a teenage girl to be allowed in either movies or in real life.
White Bird in a Blizzard
She has reason to be proud, as she has carved and shaped out her body, from beneath the prepubescent baby fat her mother always teased her about. Eve was the kind of mother who tsk-ed at every bite her daughter took, constantly reminding her of how much thinner and more appealing she was at her age. But as Kat relates, her mother only became crueler toward her as she came into her own. She watches Kat dress and do her make-up, hidden in the shadows, and lingers too long to watch her fooling around with Phil.
This is not how she should look at this age, because the actress is not of the right age. Kat cannot reject her mother, even when she is sure her mother has rejected her, even that her mother never loved her. Even as she tries to, Eve haunts her memories and she has recurring dream of her naked in the snow and calling out for her. Still, the film resists the temptation to make Eve into a monster. As viewers used to suspense plots, we expect from the beginning that something sinister has happened to Eve.
This presents a challenge to viewers: Can Eve be both villain and victim? And which is a crueler — the physical violence visited on Eve or the psychological destruction Eve imposes on her daughter? Search WorldCat Find items in libraries near you.
