Why Globalization Works. Why Globalization Works. Martin Wolf. New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, , pp. Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator at the Financial.

The debate on globalization has reached a level of intensity that inhibits comprehension and obscures the issues. In this book a highly distinguished international economist scrupulously explains how globalization works as a concept and how it operates in reality. Martin Wolf confronts the charges against globalization, delivers a devastating critique of each, and offers a realistic scenario for economic internationalism in the future. Wolf begins by outlining the history of the global economy in the twentieth century and explaining the mechanics of world trade. The author persuasively defends the principles of international economic integration, arguing that the biggest obstacle to global economic progress has been the failure not of the market but of politics and government, in rich countries as well as poor. He examines the threat that terrorism poses and maps the way to a global market economy that can work for everyone.

This is the Liberal Manifesto for the modern world, well organized, and wonderfully and cogently written. My only complaint is that Martin is still of the school that falling information costs mean that cheap information substitutes only for the expensive information it replaces. In fact, globalization is, at its core, driven by the rate at which ever cheaper information is substituted for other factor inputs like land, labor, and capital.

Cash conversion cycles tell all: Without falling information costs, globalization would stall, even shrink: What this book does is to lay out for all why liberalism is good and conservatism -- in all its forms -- so bad.

Even if you are a convinced liberal, this book is your bible worth a daily reading to keep you on track in these tough times. One person found this helpful. Paperback Verified Purchase. A must not read. Pass this one up. It is difficult to find a book which discusses the global economy in such simple yet precise terms with substantial supporting economic information Also, it is rare that a person who has extensive private sector and governmental experience writes a book such as this one as opposed to a purely academic book In this context, Martin Wolf, has an extensive background in global trade The key concepts of the book, from my perspective, is that global trade benefits everyone Of course it must also be fair trade my opinion This is an especially important concept due to the current global recession Why Globalization Works.

For those of us concerned with one of the most far-reaching issues of our time, this elegant and passionate defense of trade liberalization is essential reading. It is informed, careful in its dissection of the arguments and well written.

Essential reading for those who would like to understand the real problems facing us. Why Globalization Works is a wonderful alchemy of accessible prose and academic rigor. Drezner, International Journal. Elegantly and persuasively, Wolf marshals the facts.

Why Globalization Works

From its beginnings, sociologists have warned us of this seemingly contradictory development in the process of modernization. In his "Roses. A social hypothesis", Georg Simmel exemplifies how more equal and widespread participation in desirable goods may surprisingly lead to a sharp rise in social awareness of remaining inequalities. Such welfare dissatisfaction may cause such protests as the contemporary anti-globalization movement.

This is the paradox of the globalization age: Prosperity is — even though slower than in recent decades — still on the rise from year to year. Nevertheless, it seems that dissatisfaction with social change has risen dramatically since the 's. Nevertheless, Wolf is right when he stresses the potentially beneficial consequences of globalization.
