Professionals and enthusiasts alike will love this beautiful book by James Hoffmann. From overviews of the world's most vibrant coffee-growing regions, to step-by-step brewing tutorials, the content is educational, thought-provoking, and substantial. I've already recommended this book to Barista Magazine readers countless times. Taking the reader on a global tour of coffee-growing countries, The World Atlas of Coffee presents the bean in full-color photographs and concise, informative text. It shows the origins of coffee -- where it is grown, the people who grow it; and the cultures in which coffee is a way of life -- and the world of consumption -- processing, grades, the consumer and the modern culture of coffee. Plants of the genus Coffea are cultivated in more than 70 countries but primarily in equatorial Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. For some countries, including Central African Republic, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Honduras, coffee is the number one export and critical to the economy.

This voyage takes up most of the title and includes information on the history and current state of coffee growing, processing, and consumption in sections on Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

A strength of the book are the numerous, often full-spread photos, of coffee at every stage from fruit to cup. An unusual offering that will be of value in collections serving agriculture, business, and nutrition students. Henrietta Verma Library Journal This single-volume "all you want to know about coffee"book fills a gap in the popular reference literature.

Though the title uses the more academic word atlas, this is actually a readable work on coffee, albeit arranged by continent and then by region. It seeks to provide information on where coffee is grown, the people who grow it, and the coffee culture at large.

The book begins with an introduction to coffee and the process of getting from the bean to the cup. The atlas portion contains 30 pages covering Africa; 22 pages, Asia; and 68 pages, the Americas.

As seen in other Firefly books, it is profusely illustrated with color plates. Recommended for circulating collections at libraries where interest in coffee is high. Jerry Carbone Booklist James Hoffmann is a coffee expert, author and the World Barista Champion.

Along with a team of experts, he operates Square Mile Coffee Roasters, a multi-award-winning coffee roasting company based in East London, UK, which sources and imports coffee direct from growers, and roasts the beans on their premises.

My husband is not only the most difficult person to buy a present for but also a huge coffee snob. Cold press, press pot, drip, brew, etc. And he's tried a ton of coffees as well. He times things, checks the temperature of the water and has also used water from our well before it goes through any filtration or softening.

So I was thrilled when I got this book and not only did he not ask to return it yes, almost every present I get him but he has said how much he loves this. He said it is very comprehensive and it covers so much from the bean to the roast, coffee brewing methods, etc. So I guess I win this one. Finally, after 20 years. I can't believe that I waited this long to get this book. It's absolutely stunning and a must have for any coffee need.

Thank you James for your hard work to bring this to us and and at such an affordable price. Beautiful in every aspect. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book was suggested to me by a friend-of-a-friend who does small-batch commercial roasting and it found me at just the right place of my coffee exploration path, however, this is, probably, not the best "introduction to coffee" type of book.

The first half of the book is an overview of coffee growing, roasting and brewing and, although quite well done, in my opinion, assumes some familiarity with the subject and may feel a little cursory otherwise.

The second half is dedicated to coffee growing regions and, if you are not into that level of detail, may feel a little too "referency". One person found this helpful. Great book. The first portion of the book is very informative and interesting.

The rest should probably be used strictly as a reference book. It lists every coffee growing country, its growing history, and growing varietals. It gets very repetitive if you are reading it straight through. The first half is a rehashing of every other book on coffee, plus a bit of extra pretense.

The second half offers a great overview of the literal world of coffee, a great resource for consumers with some solid info to round out a pro's knowledge. Doesn't get into great detail on some areas but does have very current info on those it does.

Overall a better option than attempting to source this info from coffee forums, if a bit of an overpriced on. I am new to brewing and grinding my own custom coffee and that's why I bought this excellent book. There is a LOT of great information about all the different kinds of coffee, on a world round basis.

I doubt I will even be able to get a handle on all of them, but it's very nice to have a reference that I can go to when friends make suggestions. The part of the book dealing with grinding and brewing offered many good suggestions and I am very happy I make this purchase.

Useful book with many details to better understand coffee overall. Well written, adult and no trendy preaching in the text. I would recommend to adult coffee fans.
