I know the hijab is a pain for them, but they will get no sympathy from me. It is clear that the hijab is an obligation, not a choice. Among her controversial opinions is that the Chechen terrorist leader and architect of the Beslan school massacre , Shamil Basayev , was a ' shaheed ' i.

Islamic martyr. At a meeting of Respect on 6 June , following the Forest Gate raid , Ridley urged all Muslims in Britain to "boycott the police and refuse to co-operate with them in any way, shape or form until the boys are released", including "asking the community copper for directions to passing the time of day with a beat officer. Ridley later claimed that she only wanted Muslim leaders to stop co-operating, not the whole community; this is not supported by her comment about not asking directions from the police.

Initially, Ridley strongly opposed the Western intervention in the Libyan Civil War , and spoke in a rally opposing it held in Central London where she likened asking for Western support to making a pact with the Devil.

However, she later travelled to rebel-held territory, where she became a wholehearted supporter of the Libyan rebels' cause and accepted that they had no choice but to ask for help from the West.

In , she expressed her strong support for the end of secret evidence used in the SIAC case against the Jordanian Islamist cleric, Abu Qatada , and her opposition to Home Secretary Theresa May 's plans to deport him on the basis of the secret evidence from the UK. She was given all necessary clearances by the external affairs ministry, but was denied a visa at the last minute because of the tense situation in Hyderabad following the arrest of controversial local legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi a few days before the event was scheduled to take place.

However Ridley, through video conference, addressed three sessions of girls, women and journalists during the conference. Ridley says there is a clear difference between the ideologies of the Taliban and ISIL arguing while the Taliban aims to form an Islamic state within the borders of Afghanistan, ISIL is working to create a border-less Islamic state and disregards the sovereignty of other nations. She also claims that ISIL recruits by promising financial supports and power, and the Taliban is largely run and supported by Afghan people.

Ridley has been married five times. She first married when she was 22; her second marriage, to a policeman, lasted seven years; [1] her third husband was Daoud Zaaroura, the CEO of North of England Refugee Service and a former PLO head of intelligence, whom she met in Cyprus , where she was working on an assignment for the Newcastle-based Sunday Sun , and they have one daughter, Daisy Ridley, who was born in ; [3] her fourth husband, to whom she was married until , was an Israeli businessman, Ilan Hermosh; [22] [2] her fifth husband is an Algerian.

During her time on the Sunday Sun newsdesk, she told colleagues she was an officer in the Territorial Army , based on Teesside , specialising in intelligence. She had also told the same to colleagues on The Northern Echo and repeated it in interviews. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Yvonne Ridley.

The Oxford Student. It's no surprise when she gets caught, doing what her hosts told her not to do and waving a camera around. When she is caught, she kicks up a stink and won't cooperate with anything. I'm amazed that her captors didn't just shoot her because frankly, I wanted to shoot her. Her constant whining and 'me me me' attitude made me think that the whole point of the book was to promote herself.

Yvonne Ridley

She certainly wasn't doing anything in her book to promote the suffering of the real victims of the Taliban. Grow up woman and stop whining!!! View 1 comment.

Feb 17, Khalil Ullah rated it it was ok Shelves: An extraordinary story" This is what she named her book. But let me tell you its not an extraordinary book at all.

The only reason i read it was because i wanted to know how she was treated by Talibans. Taliban's faith in Allah and their "hospitality" with a prisoner is something you harldy see in wars of this age. Author also tells about the hypocricy of west who wanted her dead so they can have good reason to make some propoganda against taliban and Islam itself.

Dec 23, Sephie rated it really liked it Shelves: Yvonne certainly had a chequered past, but her determination to get a story landed her in deep trouble. The tone is a little self-congratulatory, but her experiences show that she was shown more respect by the Taliban in a worn-torn country, than her own colleagues and countrymen in our supposedly civillised society. Nov 27, Amanda Francis rated it it was ok Shelves: This book was just I had some particular pet peeves with it: Don't get me wrong, my husband is English so I understood most of it.

But if she is trying to appeal to an international audience, like Americans or English speakers of other languages, they would probably be quite lost by it. I gave it 2 stars because some if it is This book was just I gave it 2 stars because some if it is pretty interesting. And when she actually meets "the Taliban" I'm so surprised they dont just cut her tongue out. They treat her well, you know, NOT raping or stoning her.

Feeding her, keeping her in a prison with other women. And she still bites the merciful hand several times. I don't know, maybe I'm just weak but I'd be acting a lot different if I was being held hostage! Jan 13, Waseem Khan rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Feb 06, Md. Feb 02, Arafath Abdul Azeez rated it it was amazing. Really very Interesting!

Must read! Sep 10, Waleed Bin Yousuf rated it it was amazing. I've read its translated Urdu-version published by Nigarshat Publishers, Lahore. Translation was done by M. Yahya Khan. It was one of the good translations I've read in recent times.

In the hands of taliban

Jul 10, Udhayt rated it liked it. I just completed this novel with a doubtful mind whether the story is real or exaggerated. I've read few books about Taliban but this one is totally different from everything.

It tries to support Taliban activities and judging them as good. The reason behind is they behaved with Yvonne nicely and let her go safely. I bit confused in this. As far as i know Muslims respect women more. Not only Yvonne ,any woman could come out safely from Taliban's hand.

I wonder with this one incident how come one jour I just completed this novel with a doubtful mind whether the story is real or exaggerated. I wonder with this one incident how come one journalist came to a conclusion that Taliban are good. I dint get any knowledge about Taliban from this book. But i really appreciate the author's writing skill and her boldness. Aug 05, Charmaine Lloyd rated it really liked it. It opened my eyes to "another side of the story".

I have no sympathy for the Taliban, but Yvonne, reminds one of the human story of people like you and me in Afghanistan. I am currently reading another book set in Afghanistan about a woman's fight for emancipation of women and freedom from the soviet domination of the time.

So sad, that extremism and intolerance causes so much anguish for the most vulnerable in society.
