That's gold. Maybe try to get into a project with them I was able to contract 10 fellow designers to help me out with my current project, giving them more exposure, and me some excellent content. If you help and support other designers, they will usually be glad to return the favor. When you have a bit of a following, and you get a really good game idea, start a kickstarter, build hype, etc etc.
Phase 5 could be it's own rant, but phases have been SUPER important to me in my own path down this road. Also, spoilers, phases are WAY more fun than phase 5. Enjoy it! Jump in! Put stuff out there, get feedback, collaborate.
Have fun! You aren't going to make shit from rpgs. According to Mike Mearls Wizards of the Coast from a panel at a discussion, he said a successful rpg not DnD basically is around 5k copies.
Most rpgs sell fewer than 5k. If you give an rpg away for free, people will think its bad and not even look at it. Pay what you want will only work if you get enough press and word of mouth for people to be actively seeking out your game.
Pay what you want it viable, get the eyeballs out there.
You could also do something like a free pdf that is very simple toned down. There are few people who do it full time. They work for wizards of the coast, or they work in editing and publishing as well, so they put out multiple games a year, including games based on other content, and help produce other peoples games as well. No I would say asking for money makes it seem like it is a product and of good quality.
Free means it is something you did in your free time, and thus something that is probably rough, and of low quality. Eclipse Phase has long had a pay what you want for digital versions and was released under the Creative Commons license.
Last i looked they were still afloat and producing beautiful books. Its really not. They give it away for free. There have been plenty of attempts at this. There have also been plenty of attempts at free RPGs. You would think one or two open source RPG's would be huge by now. The answer is an odd mix of things. In many ways open source RPG's do exist. Dungeon World and Stars Without Number 'free editions' are almost always used. So it already exists for the most part.
It just probably isn't profitable to keep the quality up with free and pay what you want products, which is what players really want. I can't imagine anything even close to the quality of DH or VtM ever coming out of a project like this. I don't know if it's profitable. I don't know if the whole industry's profitable. It's a hobby easily susceptible to oversaturation- people can only learn so many systems, and worse- once they find a system they like, they tend to stick with it.
And everyone wants to make their own system. There's a lot of stuff that just goes totally unnoticed because of the industry. So even though pay-what-you-want might be an unprofitable way of doing things In an industry like this, people could just choose a different, free system if they think that yours may not be good and they have to pay to see.
You could get around this by doing something like releasing a bare-bones free demo for people to play around with and try out, and then a fully-fleshed system with lots of lore, preferably- that's always a good seller that requires payment, which would work well in conjunction with a kickstarter kickstart to get full version, here's a barebones demo to prove to you that my concepts good and that I'll deliver.
