Paper is on its way out for fiction and may be on very thin ice for the instructional market as well. Thanks for the article. Both scenes indicate that Cameron is in a grey area, whereas report talk and rapport talk is also included. This indicates that Cameron does not fit into a specified category to be classified into, in regards of the genderlect theory.

Patrick is more of the strong male role in the movie, fitting in more towards the male genderlect. His scene with Ms. Katarina is a feminist, which is her genderlect style that results in a masculine mannerism.

Kat merely wants to establish a good relationship with her sister. This theory may be able to relate to similar events that people may go through in regards of knowing more about a person they are interested in. Humans are conditioned to eliminate all types of uncertainty and it is proven to be motivated by having successful interactions with others they may lead to incentives. For example, a new employee in a company will get as much of information about his new employer in order to act out in a way that he might relate to him.

This is because of the motivation in being accepted in the company through means of awareness and also a sense of belonging due to the information he receives. This theory can be relatable in a business environment where one can expect something in return which would overweigh their cost or even in our day to day life as we tend to minimax our way into life.

In the movie, this particular theory was somewhat effective because even though the deal had something in return for both Joey and Patrick, Kat was the bait of the deal. She was being played along but eventually Patrick fell in love with Kat and upon knowing the truth it hurt her.

In a matter of love, this theory is not effective due to the lack of transparency between Patrick and Kat. However Kat did realize that the things she hates about Patrick are also the things she loves the most which was the sole factor which overweighed the cost as the reward was much bigger.

In the end, the reward of getting Katarina back was more than his cost of spending the amount of money on a guitar.

For Joey, he only had cost by no reward as he failed to date Bianca. If the psychological aspect is included to do further research on this theory, it may have some rebuttals to how accurate, and consistent the theory is.

Furthermore, there are other factors which contributes detriment as well to the practicality and succinctness- like patriarchy factors. In the movie, Katarina initially behaves in a manner that is not akin to how the theory suggests women communicate — she is not looking to build connections, does not talk too much or overlaps another speaker while conversing.

The social exchange theory, when applied to daily life, has no way of being tested and costs or rewards are not well defined — this may be in part due to the fact that each person behaves differently, has different values and definitions of rewards. Michael does not calculate what Cameron can do for him in return of his help but instead just willingly helps his new friend out of kindness.

The movie is also just a representation by the media and in no way true to how normal teenagers think, behave or speak. The social exchange theory suggests that every individual is calculative and rather selfish — only interacting in return for something; while most people are concerned about how they spend their time, not all are overly thoughtful and some people are just altruistic in nature.

The researchers of this theory should try to consider a way of testing their theory in order to gain reliability. The researchers should also contemplate on the fact that every person is different cognitively — some minds are more advanced and some people are more giving.

In fact, the researcher did not even consider how males and females of different races would converse with one another — more substantial research definitely has to be done and tested for credibility. Furthermore, not all theories are applicable in a day-today situation. The three theories chosen in this assignment may not be pertinent to the way most humans interact on a daily basis but the genderlect theory is the most relatable out of all.
