A provocative literary thriller that playfully pays tribute to classic tales of mystery and adventure. Lucas Corso is a book detective, a middle-aged mercenary hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. When a well-known bibliophile is found dead, leaving behind part of the original manuscript of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers , Corso is brought in to authenticate the fragment. He is soon drawn into a swirling plot involving devil worship, occult practices, and swashbuckling derring-do among a cast of characters bearing a suspicious resemblance to those of Dumas's masterpiece. Aided by a mysterious beauty named for a Conan Doyle heroine, Corso travels from Madrid to Toledo to Paris on the killer's trail in this twisty intellectual romp through the book world. But the book has a much more complicated plot, one that tricks you in the end. Once the action started up beginning with the entrance of the mysterious young girl the book really got me going. Then I was hooked. It has a much more complicated plot than the movie and heads in a completely different direction. Very good, though it left me a little disappointed in the end.

I wanted to know more. Still, highly recommended. One person found this helpful. Paperback Verified Purchase. An interesting exploration of a literary agent exploring a known book about the devil transposed with the Dumas story of the "Three Musketeers".

While the only devil to be summoned up is that of one's own inner devil Well worth the read and far better than the Ninth Gate movie.

Best novel you've never heard of. Typical of other book-to-film adaptations, the book is so much richer.

Unrelated, right? Or are they? The book is told using many references to classic literature, including of course "The Three Musketeers", "Moby Dick", and many others. The characters themselves become characters within these classics, following clues to unlocking the mysteries of the two manuscripts, and paralleling their fates.

There is humor, intrigue, mystery, and all around fun in this book. I can't believe that it is not more popular. Pick it up for the weekend because I guarantee you will not be able to put it down and it's a quick read. One of the best modern novels I have ever read and re-read. It's truly a work of story-telling genius.

I have purchased copies for many friends, all of whom rave about it. A zillion people have reviewed this book, so I'm just throwing in my belated two cents that this is a reading experience you don't want to miss. This book is sneaky, and while I often find myself resentful of sneaky books, I think I can forgive this one, because, in the end, it plays fair, relying on the reader to make inferences or follow lines of thought uncritically.

Also, I appreciate an intelligent protagonist and Lucas Corso is an intelligent protagonist. Shrewd, educated, maybe not as nice as he could be, but there is a noir sensibility amidst the bibliophilia and occultism - no one here is nice and everyone has a scheme.

If you like your plots convoluted and your endings unexpected, you will probably enjoy The Club Dumas. A book so we'll assembled in the occult realm that it can be relished by all. Corso lives on as Johnny Depp in the movie version. The comparisons with the experience of Napoleon's final campaign are really inspired writing.

Thoroughly enjoyable reading for anyone with an interest in the dark side of history. See all reviews. Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.

Corso is astonished to find that they only want to see the Dumas manuscript, and know nothing about The Nine Doors. He is invited to stay for the party, but chooses to leave.

Corso returns to Spain to confront Borja. Corso does not question this, and finds himself even more strongly attracted to her. He accuses Borja of being responsible for both murders.

Borja, intending to use the legitimate copy of The Nine Doors to summon the Devil and gain ultimate knowledge, has destroyed his entire library to prevent others from following his lead. Corso demands payment, but Borja ignores him and begins the ritual. Corso, who notices that one of the plates that Borja is using is a forgery, leaves in disgust. He hears Borja's screams of anguish as the ritual goes awry, and surmises that each of them will get the devil they deserve.

The Club Dumas references many books. Several of the references are not to a work itself, but to a singular instance of the physical book, such as a rare edition or type of binding. Several of these books are inventions of Perez-Reverte. The books mentioned are as follows:. Occultist works published by the fictional historical author Aristide Torchia in Venice:. Books by an unnamed Nobel-prize -winning author:. Aristide Torchia, a fictional historical author from the novel, has been referred to in other media including The Ninth Gate a film based on the novel , and video game Max Payne.

The fictional character Torchia was born in He was apprenticed in Leyden under the Elzevir family. After returning to Venice he published small works on philosophical and esoteric themes.

The Inquisition condemned Torchia for magic and witchcraft and burned him at the stake in While following the same basic plotline for the first two-thirds of the film, the finale is significantly altered in the movie. Several characters' roles diminish, expand, merge, swap or disappear completely, and one of the novel's most important subplots - the Dumas connection - is removed entirely.
