The last Alex Cross books have really disappointed me and made me wonder if Patterson is writing too much. This book, while co-authored, restored some of my love for Patterson's style and talent. THis time around, Zack Jordan and Kylie MacDonald are dealing with a serial killer who's out for the wrong kind of justice.

When the book begins, the Hazmat Killer - named for displaying his or her dead victims in hazmat suits - has already killed three people after forcing them to give video confessions. It's a tactic that would anger Dexter Morgen for sure. But Red is only called in when victim number four, a local celebrity, is found tied to the carousel in Central Park. What follows is a politically storm of the highest order, with the mayor doing everything he can to interfere in order to retain his job at an election that will go down in just a few days.

Zack and Kylie really feel the pressure here. The book takes a few twists on it's way to finding the killer, and for good measure, a dangerous mafia dynasty with a personal vendetta is thrown in, adding an extremely tense climax.

NYPD Red 2

A few personal issues help keep characters on their toes, adding a new layer to the story. Zack has a girlfriend now, but their relationship is throated by an annoying English computer geek who apparently has the hots for her.

Kylie's husband, meanwhile, has become addicted to painkillers following the events of the previous novel, straining her relationship with him and potentially her ability to solve the case. Ultimately, the book is a quality, unashamedly commercial thriller that will keep you up all night long.

It's not quite the twisted roller-coaster ride of the previous instalment in the series, but it still turns out to be a great ride.

Highly recommended.

In contrast, as murders continue mounting, I found the middle of the book surprisingly boring and hard to keep track of. Too many details, with names of people and different parts of the city cited did little to pull everything together for me until the last part of the book.

The gist of the story is that the killer's style was to hold a person hostage somewhere in a "Hazmat" suit for a few days, and then kill the person and dump the body. Although I think this story wasn't written as well as many mystery or crime stories, this one held my interest enough for me to finish it. I'm glad I did. Patterson has done it again! Although I could have done without the side story of Kylie and Spence, this was a nailbiter.

The serial killer bit has been done and done again, but not like this. Patterson's strategy of introducing the young people and their plight then barreling into the story is masterful! Each character is drawn with a fine brush that identifies the flaws as well as the strengths.

I was delighted to meet Matt Smith whose IT wisdom was compelling even in this day and age, but whose sarcasm and wit was so unanticipated and appreciated. Our talented duo of detectives were so vigilant with their skills but at times just plain lucky that some of their leads panned out. The political situation with the mayor election was a bit overplayed but did give a sense of urgency to the plot. The portrayal of the four NYPD cops is quite interesting and makes me glad that I am not dependent upon them for protection.

The mob boss is evil incarnate and could be pictured easily as the traditional large, cigar-smoking, overweight, oily guy to be suspected anywhere you might meet him! As, I say, careful drawing of each character! But, the plot is sensational. Putting it down at 2 AM to get some sleep before an early morning was really difficult. Hurrying home to finish it, was really easy!

Patterson at his best!

Unlike the Private novels. The NYPD series focuses on one plot which is nice to have. Although Private's multiple plots in one book is nice it just doesn't work out. The multiple story lines only for books like Harry Potter, etc. James Patterson and his co-author for the Private series cannot do this well. However, he learns his lesson in the NYPD series and I consider this sequel to be better than the first book. Marshall Karp and Patterson are a great combo together.

Keep it going! Once again James Patterson has written another terrific book. As with James Patterson books, there are many twists and turns and multiple storylines. Not only does this book focus on the hunt for the serial killer but the Detectives relationships as well, which allows us to better get to know the Detectives.

This was a fast moving book and that was hard to put down. A fast read that will not disappoint. For the James Patterson fans, another novel that will not disappoint us. See all 2, reviews. But even with their top-notch training, Zach and Kylie aren't prepared for what they see when they're called to a crime scene in the heart of Central Park. They arrive to find a carousel spinning round and round, its painted horses grinning eerily in the early morning dark.

There is only one rider: The victim, a woman of vast wealth and even greater connections, is the fourth in a string of shocking murders that have hit the city.

As the public pressure mounts, and political and personal secrets of the highest order hang in the balance, Zach and Kylie must find out what's really behind the murderer's rampage. But Kylie has been acting strange recently-and Zach knows whatever she's hiding could threaten the biggest case of their careers. NYPD Red 2 is the next outstanding novel in James Patterson's newest series, a thriller that careens through New York City and deep into the psyche of a depraved killer you've never seen before.
